Hands on Charlotte

Hands on Charlotte was started in 1991 and currently operates as a program of the United Way of Central Carolinas. They operate as an organization that connects people in local areas to volunteer opportunities. There are currently more than 200 affiliate volunteer action centers throughout the U.S. Their mission is to inspire, equip and mobilize a diverse corps of volunteers to strengthen our community. We do this by creating and managing flexible volunteer opportunities for individuals and companies, connecting them with service projects that have meaningful impact (About Us: Hands on Charotte, 2018). They have five core values and work mostly with organizations that promote education, sustaining the environment, and economic prosperity to name a few.

Internal Recruiting

Internal recruiting involves filling vacate positions within the organization with someone currently employed by the organization. Like with every HR functions there are advantages and disadvantages to using internal resources. One advantage is the ability to have continuous gain from the original investment in an employee. One disadvantage is the lack of innovation and diverse ideas because of existing relationships and ties within the organization.

External Recruiting

External recruiting is the act of seeking qualified applicants outside of the organization (Pynes, 2013). One advantage to external recruiting is an increase in demographic diversity within the organization. It also allows for a change in the internal culture. Another advantage is the ease of getting vacation positions out to the public through the use of e-recruiting and technology. This avenue could also be a disadvantage if no recruitment plan is in place. It can also affect the quality and number of candidates reviewed for a position through the use of selection programs. Seeking external applicants can also effect employee morale and employee’s perception on how the organization feels about employee training and development. The biggest concern with external recruiting is organizational fit.
