Current role in Criminal Justice

I currently work for Family Services in the Criminal Court as an Intake Assistant. My role is to speak to individuals who come to the window and direct them where to go. If the person was arrested the night before, I sign them in and tell them to have a seat in the lobby. I then go to the clerk’s office and grab the police reports and enter the new cases into the system. The cases are assigned to a Family Services counselor (FRC) who will interview the client and determine if they are eligible for our services. If the client is referred to our office, I send out supervision letters to both the defendant and the victim stating the court conditions whether it is completing anger management or the Family Violence Education program.

I am obtaining my Master’s in Criminal Justice so I can become a Family Services Counselor (FRC). An FRC interviews clients who have been arrested for a domestic violence offense and determine if they are eligible for Family Services. A client is eligible if they have no domestic violence convictions and have not taken the Family Violence Education Program. If clients are referred to our office, the counselor will then monitor their progress and report it to the Court. Once the client has completed all their conditions, the charges will be nolled or dismissed depending on what the recommendations were. An FRC also monitors civil cases such as custody, divorce, and child support.

Resources used

There are certain resources that help me to complete my role and an intake assistant and would help me as an FRC. One of the resources we use is a police report which is brought in by different town where the offenses have occurred. A police report is a detailed report, written by a police officer, detailing the crime or incident. This provides information about the defendant and the victim which is important information needed for the protective order that will be issued. Also, the police report provides information to the counselor about how serious the incident was and can help determine if the client will benefit from our services or not (What is a Police Report, n.d.). Another resource Family services uses are case files. A case file is a collection of documents and evidence related to a particular legal case. As intake assistants and FRC’s we have to look at the criminal history of our clients to determine if they are eligible for our services. They case file contains other criminal cases they have had and we can see if they have ever had any involvement with Family Services in the past. Every case gets scanned into the system so intake assistants and FRC’s can obtain information on other case files. Researching these case files is important because it help the intake assistant and FRC to determine their eligibility. If the client has worked with family or has a domestic violence conviction in Connecticut or any other state they are not eligible.
