Goffman claims that social roles can be equated with the dramatic roles played by the actors. In social situations, as on a stage, people engage in impression management. To clarify, they manage the setting, their dress, their words and their gestures to correspond to the impression they are trying to make. Consequently, people alter their behavior depending on whether they are on the front stage or the back stage. Just as impression management is an integral part of the socialization process, so is emotion management.
