In 2011, E. Pariser gave a TED Talk on the idea of filter bubbles. View this presentation at http://www.ted.com/talks/eli_pariser_beware_online_filter_bubbles?language=en#t-104993. For this week’s discussion:
First, evaluate Pariser’s talk and the article by Williams. Then, in your response address the following:
- What common concerns do the two authors share?
- How are their two sources different?
Next, reflect on your own information-seeking and decision making. Then, in your response, address the following:
- What are some of your personal filters?
- Have you ever discovered that your biases (or the biased information you received) made it difficult for you to see the whole picture?
Lastly, reflect on the issues associated with search engine optimization, page rank, content farms, and/or spam sites. Then, in your response, address the following:
- How do library subscription databases differ from the free web?
- What are the benefits/precautionary measures for using both?
- What ethical (socioeconomic or legal) implications are associated with access and dissemination of information?
