geology discussion post 1

Early efforts at reconstructing the skeletons of prehistoric mammals were almost comical for the mistakes that were made. It was not until paleontologists began to study in detail modern mammal anatomy that these reconstructions began to take on some degree of reality. This is in effect, a variation of a very fundamental precept of geology first voiced by James Hutton in the 1700’s: the doctrine of uniformitarianism, or (the present is the key to the past).

What are some other ways we apply uniformitarianism in paleontology or life in the past? Use the modern whale for examples of how the skeletons of ancient whales helped us understand their remarkable transitions. You may want to elaborate on the environmental pressures spurred on the evolution of these animals.
